The Mission of the Department of Information Technology is to provide adequate, relevant and reliable technologies that support realization of the College’s goals and mission.
The St. Francis College Local Area Network is comprised of a gigabit network infrastructure with a fiber backbone connected to the Internet via a fractional T3. The College’s IT department currently maintains two server rooms consisting of an array of hardware and virtual servers as well as network attached storage. The IT department currently deploys servers running the Windows Server product line, commercial Linux OS as well as relying on Open Source operating systems when appropriate. The College has found that Open Source platforms provide reliability, flexibility and quality without the constraints of proprietary systems and the burden of licensing fees.
Desktop systems primarily run Windows XP Professional (due to the demand), Mac OS X, as well as Red Hat Fedora Core. The specific applications loaded are dependent on the systems function, and location. At this time the College supports upwards of 600 workstations including PC desktops, laptops, and thin clients.
