Thursday, February 18th would have been Arthur Curry’s fiftieth birthday. To celebrate the occasion, St. Francis College will formally announce the establishment of the Arthur Curry Scholarship Program at 11:00am in the College’s Genovesi Center.
HBO commentator Jim Lampley, who will emcee the event, former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. and others who knew Curry well, will share memories of this remarkable man.
After a disadvantaged childhood that saw him shuttled from foster home to foster home, Curry found stability and hope under the guidance of Edward and Lise Curry, who took him into their home at age seventeen and later adopted him. His years at HBO began in the mail room at Time-Life (then HBO’s parent company). Over the course of three decades, he worked his way up the corporate ladder and became one of the most-respected and universally loved people in boxing. (To see a video about Arthur Curry,

“Artie is what religion is all about,” says former heavyweight champion George Foreman. “He was a walking Sunday school lesson. He treated people the way he wanted to be treated - The Golden Rule. And the more you spoke with Artie, the more depth you found. He was very important to me, and I’m not just saying that because he’s gone. Artie was one of my heroes.”
St. Francis Chancellor Frank J. Macchiarola ’62 observes, “The scholarship program will bond Arthur Curry’s legacy in perpetuity with the St. Francis community and ensure that his good works did not end with his death. It will be a symbol of a life well led and help advance the lives of the young men and women who will carry his name forward.”
The Arthur Curry Scholarship Program has been funded with the generous support of HBO and Artie’s many friends.
