Political Science is a social science chiefly concerned with the description and analysis of political and governmental institutions and processes. Generally speaking, Political Science majors study the development and function of governments, and the behavior of rulers throughout history.
Political Science majors at St. Francis College learn the critical thinking skills in logic, writing, and analysis that are in high demand in today’s competitive job market. While many Political Science majors go into law, others pursue opportunities in a variety of areas in public life, including public relations firms; political campaigns; lobbying and advocacy groups; local, state, and national government; management and consulting firms; as well as in teaching, journalism, and public policy.
Political Science majors at St. Francis College can take advantage of a wide variety of internships in law firms; City, State, and U.S. Courts; with government officials from New York City, New York State, and the U.S Congress; at the United Nations with non-governmental organizations; and much more. Other opportunities include internships with some of the numerous museums and historical societies in New York City, a summer study abroad program, participation in the Model United Nations and activities through the St. Thomas Pre-Law Society such as mock trial, lawyers’ luncheon, LSAT preparation, and workshop on applying to law schools.
