Biology is the study of the natural world in which we live. You will learn about living organisms at the molecular, microscopic, and systemic levels. After graduation, Biology majors can pursue a variety of careers including physicians and physician assistants; dentists; podiatrist; scientists; veterinarians; teachers; x-ray technicians; sonographers and nurses. Careers can also be pursued in biotechnology firms; hospitals; pharmaceutical companies as well as universities.
And with job growth expected in a number of areas in the biological health and environmental sciences, especially biotechnology and molecular biology, you can look forward to a healthy job market and a career filled with exciting opportunities.
The Biology department at St. Francis College offers majors in Biology (as preparation for medical and graduate school), Biomedical Science, Medical Technology, and Radiologic Sciences. Radiologic Sciences and Medical Technology are offered jointly with St. John’s University and Methodist Hospital. (St. Francis College awards the BS degree). We encourage Biology students to consider the diverse opportunities available through field placements, internships, or semesters abroad. Many of our students conduct summer research projects at such esteemed institutions as NYU Medical School, Fordham University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Columbia University, the American Museum of Natural History, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the New York City Department of Health, and at companies such as Pfizer, Colgate-Palmolive, and numerous hospitals. Our graduates go on to places such as Albany Medical College, the University of Connecticut, Downstate Medical School, the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, New York University and Boston University and other medical, dental and osteoathic schools. Our students also go onto Ph.D programs at schools such as Hunter College, Fordham University, SUNY Buffalo, Cornell, Albert Einstein College of Medicine and other prestigious universities.
