BS, Northeastern University
MA, City College
Ph.D., CUNY Graduate Center

Dr. Nolan taught biology at a variety of New York area colleges before joining St. Francis College, including Yeshiva University, Columbia University, Iona College and LaGuardia Community College. She teaches General Biology, Ecology, Genetics and other topics with research focused on environmental biology and aquatic ecosystems.

Her dissertation project concerned the genetics of fish populations. She is also very interested in laboratory education, and is on the board of ABLE (the Association of Biology Laboratory Education), the vice-president of the Metropolitan Association of College and University Biologists and the president of the Metro NY Chapter of the Association of Women in Science (Read the Winter 2009 newsletter).  She is the current chair of the Biology Department, the moderator of the Pre-Health Sciences Club, and advises students on various career paths.

Allen Burdowski, Professor
Academic Credentials
BA, Hunter College
Ph.D., New York University

James E. Corrigan, Professor
Academic Credentials
BS, St. Francis College
MS, Long Island University
Ph.D., New York University

Dr. Corrigan has taught biology and chemistry courses at St. Francis College, Long Island University and Borough of Manhattan Community College including: General Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, medical Microbiology, Invertebrate Zoology, Ecology, Botany, Biological Instrumentation and Oceanography.

For almost 40 years, he has conducted research studies in the Gowanus Canal, at Gateway National Recreation Area (Plum Beach, Canarsie, Great Kills) and New York Harbor. Dr. Corrigan's research work focuses on the field of marine microbiology, with emphasis on ectocrine (extracellular) organic compounds and biotoxins (saxitoxin, gonyautoxin and domoic acid) produced by marine algae (phtyoplankton) and marine bacteria and their interaction in the ecosystem.

He has mentored 42 undergraduate students at St. Francis College presenting their work at Eastern College Science Conferences, as well as at the Hudson River Foundation. He has also mentored 26 students on their master’s dissertations at Long Island University whose work was conducted in cooperation with St. Francis Labs.

He served six years in the U.S. Army (Infantry branch) and received extensive military education and training in chemical, biological and nuclear warfare. Dr. Corrigan also provided his expertise in warfare and terrorism to the New York City Office of Emergency Management. He regularly presents lectures on chemical and biological warfare and WMD (weapons of mass destruction) to various public and private groups as well as academic institutions. In the academic arena his lectures cover algal biochemistry and physiology, ectocrine substance from algae and algal toxins and their ecosystem interaction.

He is the recipient of the St. Francis College Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Award and a four time recipient of the Student Government Award as Outstanding Faculty Member. He has received a Mentorship Award from the Hudson River Foundation.

Ellen L. Glascock, Professor
Academic Credentials
BA, Connecticut College
MFA, University of North Carolina, Greensboro
MPA, Ph.D., New York University

I came to St. Francis College in 1978 to Chair the newly formed (and later renamed) Health Promotion Department and received tenure in 1983, one of the first three tenured women at the college and the first woman to receive the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Alumni Association. I accepted it with appreciation to all the other women who have blazed trails.

Since joining the college I have served as Assistant Dean for the Division of Sciences & Allied Health and Director of Pre-Medical Advisement, taught several specialty courses (Healing and Wholeness, Women’s Health Issues, and Women Growing Older), taught Women in the Arts and Sciences and Healing in a Cultural Context for the Honors Program and presided over the senior Seminar in Bioethical Issues.

Steven M. Lipson, Professor
Academic Credentials
BS, MS, Long Island University
Ph.D., New York University

Dr. Steven M. Lipson is the former Chief of Virology and former Assistant Director of Microbiology at the Nassau County Medical Center. He also served as the Director of Virology and Cellular Immunology at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health Care System. He, along with fellow St. Francis Professor Dr. Allen Burdowski, has achieved widespread acclaim for research into the curative powers of cranberries and grapes. They have shown that both cranberries and grape juice are effective in combating viral infections.
