Welcome to the Academic Enhancement Center
The Academic Enhancement Center (AEC) is a community of learners. The Center is comprised of professional and peer tutors and gives all students the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for academic success and independence at the college level.
Our mission at the Academic Enhancement Center is to help students discover their own potential for academic success. We stress learning as an ongoing process, a mutual, interactive experience between tutor and student. We are not only a Center of support but also a Center for enhancement and enrichment.
The services the Center provides are:
Workshops
During each semester the Academic enhancement center conducts workshops in reading and writing that are designed to help students improve their skills in these areas. Some specific workshops include grammar, essay writing, and research skills.
Intensive Reading & Writing Course
The Center offers a course, College Reading & Study or SFC 040, which is a non-credit course that helps native and non-native speakers develop the skills needed to meet the demands of academic English. Students will improve their reading, writing, and study skills in a variety of activities designed to stimulate discussion. The course is offered every semester during the day.
Tutoring
An important service provided by the Academic Enhancement Center is academic tutoring. The Center provides both peer and professional tutors who assist students in all content areas. The Center's professional staff and peer tutors meet with students individually or in groups. Students are encouraged to arrange an appointment or simply drop-in. The Center is open Monday to Friday from 9am - 7pm.
Computer Resources
The Academic Enhancement Center is equipped with the latest computer technology with full access to the Internet and Intranet. Students may use the computers to access search engines along with our library resources in order to conduct research and to complete their assignments.
Placement Testing
All first-time freshmen must take the college's placement exams in English and mathematics. Transfer students who have not received transfer credit for English and mathematics are also required to take these exams. Results of the exams are used to place students in appropriate English and math courses.
Summer Programs
Pre-Collegiate Summer Program provides intensive instruction in writing, reading, and mathematics for students whose skills, based on the placement exams, are below those necessary for college success.
Summer Enrichment Program (A New York Odyssey: Bridge to a New World) is a unique opportunity for incoming freshmen to explore the poetry, drama, and film that has immortalized New York as the mythological cornerstone of American culture. The program is designed to introduce students to literary, historical, and even heroic dimensions of the city and to the immeasurable influence of its immigrant population.
